Busy Week Before April Break

Thanks to a grant from the PTO we have had Time for Kids in our classroom all year.  Each edition is about current events.

Fraction Race Game-examples of math talk overheard: 

"I need either a fourth or 2 eighths to win."

"We covered the same amount-we are tied."

"You can win if you get a half or two fourths."

Another Kidblog post!  

A student suggested that we post one of our essays to Kidblog so here they are hard at work.  

Choose, revise, edit, post!  We used the Chromebooks and worked in our room.

We finished our read aloud of Clarence Cochran.  We brainstormed a list of "big ideas"the book taught us. Here are some:

• Be yourself
• Believe in yourself
• Persevere
• It's ok to be different
• Say you're sorry
• Never give up
• Family loves you no matter what
• Compromise

National Symbols and More....

We are learning about National Symbols.  

First students read about several symbols with a partner and answered some comprehension questions about what they read.

Then each student will chose several symbols to research and take notes on by themselves.

During Writing we are working on writing essays that have a topic sentence, at least three supporting details, and a closing sentence.  Partners read each other their essays.  They kept track on their fingers every time they heard one of these important elements.

Writers are using a planner that helps them plan out their topic sentence, three supporting details and their closing sentence.

Four Winds-Birds!

The kids played a fun bird call version of Marco Polo.  With their eyes closed they needed to walk towards the "birds" that have the same call as them.  They had a lot of fun with this game as you can see!

A sixth grader came to share a robot he built.  The class really enjoyed learning about it and seeing it in action!

Our new class read aloud:

"When Clarence Cochran wakes up one evening, he’s shocked. Where are his antennae and his beautiful wings? And what is this strange pair of shorts that he’s wearing? Clarence has changed from a cockroach into a tiny human boy! The other cockroaches are disgusted. Only Clarence’s mother understands. “Be who you are,” she says. “You will do wonderful things.” And when the entire roach community – happily living in the messy Gilmartin kitchen – is threatened with extermination, Clarence does, setting out on a dangerous journey to enlist the help of ten-year-old Mimi Gilmartin in a quest to save his family and friends."
