A few new reading tips.....

How can knowing ten and more facts (teen numbers) help us solve + 9 facts?

When solving + 9 facts, like  9 + 4, we can take one off the 4 and add it to the 9 .....it becomes 10 + 3! 

We played a bingo game where we practiced adding 9 or 10 to numbers.  

The class did great with this new concept!

We learned some mapping skills basics this week.

In music they are learning to dance!

Celebrate our differences!

 

 

February Fun

 In math we have been working with 2D and 3D shapes

 

We collected dimes and pennies throughout the month of January.  

We graphed and counted our final collection.

A fun Mystery Science lesson taught us how to insulate houses to keep them warm.  Then they designed their own winter cabins for an imaginary ski resort.

 

Opinion writing about our favorite horses and dragons from a collection.  

This was fun!

 

Reading Workshop Revamp

Now that the students are more independent and able to sustain reading for longer periods of time I have redesigned our reader's workshop.  Children first practiced reading alone, with a partner and in a small group.  Then I introduced a new schedule, pictured below.  Every day I work with 2 groups.  As we move forward and this routine is more firmly established I will begin to add targeted mini lessons for the the whole class in addition to the small group work.  First graders grow tremendously as readers over the course of the year.
