We have officially kicked off our first writing unit-Small Moment Personal Narratives. We are teaching children how to zoom in on a story from their lives and stretch it across pages. Our mentor text for this unit is Night Of the Veggie Monster. Writers use mentor texts to learn how to become better writers.
Writers are learning how to choose a topic and to plan it by touching each page of their book before they begin writing.
Word Study
Digraphs are two letters that work together to make one sound.
One way we practice is by sorting pictures by the digraphs we hear.
During sentence dictation we practice targeted spelling skills as well as rules of punctuation and capitalization. We build the sentence together on the board using these sentence frame pieces. Ask your child why the first frame is taller than the others.
They also practice sentence writing skills by "unscrambling" sentences and putting them together correctly.
