Winding down in December!

What a busy two weeks! Here's a brief overview to end the year.

We learned the rule about when to start a word with a c or a k

We learned about the suffix s. 

Some readers searched for words that had a suffix s in their reading group books.

We continued to learn about the ways people around the world celebrate their beliefs and religion. 

 

December 3 was the International Day of People with Disabilities.  We read books and watched videos to help build our understanding of this topic.  We focused on how we are all the same and different.

We shared our finished nonfiction teaching books!  

We were having a practice fire drill that afternoon so we had our coats on so we would not be cold.

We are practicing different strategies each day to help us regulate our engines and our emotions. 

Practicing math skills through games is always fun!

We had a school wide celebration for filling our penny jars.

First, fourth and fifth graders chose different activities and spent time together having fun. 

My room hosted students who wanted to build.

Classroom Fun!

 Math

Learning about 3d shapes with our December calendar. 

We are using number lines to add and subtract.  

We have been using number lines that count by ones and tens. 

Playing a fun math game-addition facts were randomly generated with cards and a spinner.  They told  a math story to match and acted it out on their number lines with frogs.

For the month of December we are learning about traditions we have in our families as well those worldwide.  In a recent Seesaw activity there was a bookshelf of books that they could choose to have read to them that taught about winter celebrations worldwide. They also learned how to record themselves using the video tool.

We transitioned back into writing workshop once our science units wrapped up.  We are learning how to write nonfiction teaching books.  Each day I start with a mini lesson where I show them how to make their writing better.  Before moving on in our books we go back to finished books and find where we can add these new ideas. 

An example of a comparison:

Ask yourself, what question might the reader have and then adding more.  

One way tot do this is to write a "twin sentence".
