Second Graders Hard at Work

Mr. Miller is joining us for Technology Skills class for the next few Mondays to help us learn how to log in and use Typing Club.  Learning how to type on a keyboard not using the hunt and peck method is critical for students,

Our math focus is on place value.  We are also learning how to record arrays as repeated addition.

Symbols of America

This past week we learned about The White House and Mount Rushmore.  We are learning how to read nonfiction and take notes.

First, we think of what words we might come across.  This helps get ready to read.  

Then we read a book once through stopping and talking about new learning.  

Next, we reread it a second time, thinking what important facts we want to record.  

We close the books so that we can get the facts into our own words and not just copy directly from the book-this takes practice!

Publishing!  

We are hard at work publishing our first stories from our Personal Narrative Unit!

Global Readaloud Week 1:

Our students successfully practiced their listening and focusing attention skills to listen to and solve clues that helped them break into their special Global Readaloud box. Inside their box was the first book we are sharing for Global Readaloud, My Heart Fills with Happiness. Special thanks to Mrs. Sumner for creating a special video clue for them!

Global Readaloud Week 2:

We read our second Global Readaloud Book  Wild Berries by Julie Flett. Students found clues to the words and pictures that helped them understand the setting of the story.

We talked about how the setting can be a part of a character's community. As a part of Global Readaloud, we are part of an online community. New vocabulary that we are learning-

We went online using the internet to watch some FlipGrid videos made for us by friends in Canada! They were talking about their communities. Next week we will be working on one ourselves to share out as we learn to be safe and respectful in this online Global Readaloud community.

Global Readaloud Week 3:

This week was exciting! We watched a video of author Monique Gray Smith reading our next Global Readaloud book, You Hold Me Up . We reviewed our new vocabulary words - internet, online, and community. Our lesson was all about going places safely when we are online. We learned three rules that we are hoping families can help us remember. 

1. Always ask a parent, teacher, or other trusted grownup before going online.

2. Talk to people you know, or have a parent, teacher, or other trusted grownup help you talk to others in in a safe way in your online community.

3. Always go to sites that are "just-right" for second graders.

We watched FlipGrid videos from other classrooms talking about how they "hold each other up". Monica's class created a video of their own to share with other Global Readaloud classrooms about how we "hold each other up".

In math class we are counting larger quantities by grouping into tens and ones.  

We are also comparing numbers in the double digits.

   

We finished reading Brambleheart.  In the book, Twig misses the "Naming Ceremony" on the Hill.  Students chose names for him based on the book.
