Happy Fall!

Ever heard of International Dot Day?  Click on this link to learn more. It was inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.   If you have never read this inspirational book, click here for a link to read aloud of it.

At CCS our primary teachers always celebrate it. Our class made this collaborative poster:

Once a week we engage in social emotional learning activities using the Second Step Program.
Click here for the scope and sequence of skills taught in first grade.  Lessons begin with photographs that are the launching pad for our discussion and activities.

Here is this week's photograph and big ideas of the lesson.

We have been talking about our Zones of Regulation.  Our optimal zone for learning is the green zone.

We sorted different emotions into each zone whole class and individually.

After high energy periods of our day, like PE or recess, we use a breathing ball to help us calm our bodies down and get ready for learning.

This week Michelle and I both rolled out a special nook in our classrooms where children can go to help them regulate and get back into the green zone whenever they feel the need throughout the day.  We discussed different strategies we can use and every student had a chance to sit and explore the different tools.  Our UVM student Izzy helped to facilitate their time there.

In math we are using dominoes to practice adding and comparing numbers.
We have learned the traditional game of Dominoes as well as Domino Top Draw.

We are practicing our numeral writing.
Working to correct reversals as we practice counting forward and back.

We are also using a large number line to practice counting by ones as well as skip counting.
We talked about the difference about the ones family and tens family.

We are also working hard to write our lower case letters correctly.

The class has loved hearing the different Scaredy Squirrel Books.
And our UVM students love to be given opportunities to read to the class.

Students also love cozying up and reading with them.

And lastly here are some explore time photos to end this post-love the smiling faces!

We read the book All Are Welcome and have been engaging in activities to get to know one another, talk about similarities and differences, establish routines and have fun!

Some other books that have sparked classroom discussion about the ways we want our classroom and school to be are....

We also read The Important Book and wrote about what makes each of us important

Unfortunately this is the first year ever that we did not find monarch caterpillars to bring into the classroom.  We are relying on books and videos to learn about their amazing life cycle.

We are learning to use chromebooks this year!

Explore time in the classroom

Fun on the playground!
