How can we sort river rocks by size?

We used 3 screens with different sized mesh.

  

We found that the mixture had three different types of rock in it:

gravel, pebbles and sand.

Once a week we have been practicing our typing skill using a program called Typing Club.  

In math we practice writing numbers through 1000.

Our nonfiction reading unit has wrapped up.  This past week children chose a book and then took notes on what they learned.  I was really impressed with the quality of their work.

Our Second Step work has focused on skills for learning

Now we will move into feelings, starting with being able to identify feelings:

Concepts	Objective—Students will be able to:
Clues in faces, bodies, and situations help you notice and understand how people are feeling. Everyone feels a wide variety of emotions. Some feelings are comfortable, and others are uncomfortable.	Name a variety of feelings Distinguish between comfortable and uncomfortable feelings Use physical, verbal, and situational clues to determine what others are feeling

We watched a short video about Daniel and his family.  During a walk in the woods, Daniel gets separated from his family.  We zoomed in on different moments and came up with this list of feelings.  

We spent another technology session using Seesaw-a new platform for using technology in the classroom. Thank you to Mr. Miller and Mrs. Murray for their support!

Welcome November!

We are wrapping up our American Symbols unit.  

We learned about The Pledge, the Liberty Bell, and the Statue of Liberty.  

Now we are working on a culminating project that will be posted in the hallway-stay tuned!

Our Second Step focus this week was on "Being Assertive"

The most exciting news is the kick off of our Rock Unit!

First we discussed what science and scientists.

Then we activated our prior knowledge and thought of questions we have.

 

Each investigation starts off with a guiding question that focuses our work. 

What happens when rocks rub together?

 

What happens when rocks are placed in water? 

This was so exciting but I did not get any photos of the rocks in the water-ask your child about it!

Sorting Day-how are river rocks the same?  How are they different?

Our science wall will house all our facts and our new vocabulary words-I am going to need a bigger bulletin board!

Strengthening our understanding of arrays and addition through games during math class.

A beloved CCS Tradition-the Carnation Ceremony.

  Our eighth graders welcome our kindergartners with a carnation in the fall.  

At the end of the year, the kindergartners present the eighth graders with a carnation as they prepare to graduate.  This teacher/mom fought back tears.
