Before their pieces were published we learned how to add "craft moves" to our writing.
As you read their books with them look for these craft moves:
Adding ellipses and pop out words were class favorites.
During word study we practice our spelling skills through phoneme grapheme mapping, spelling words on magnetic boards, worksheet practice, white board practice and sentence dictation practice on paper. The past two weeks we have focused on what we call the doubling rule. When a one syllable word has a short vowel followed by an f, l, s, or z at the end, we double those letters, like in the words off, fill, mess, & fuzz. Distinguishing between short and long vowel sounds is foundational to understanding & applying this skill. Here are our guide words to help illustrate.
