Last week of 2019

We had a fun week before the break.  

On Monday we attended  the 7/8 Winter Concert,

Thursday we watched the second half of the traditional CCS Staff vs Students basketball game.

We earned a lot of pennies in December!  

On Friday second graders read their writing to their stuffies and then joined the first graders to celebrate our hard work with another combined art day!

We finished reading the Tale of Desperaux and will watch the movie together on Friday, 1/3.

First Grade Writing: First grade writers are continuing their nonfiction teaching unit. We continue to focus on planning our work and we had two guided inquiry sessions. Students were given a question and then worked together to come up with ideas. These inquiry questions were: What are some of the special techniques that information book authors use to give their illustrations teaching power? and What have I already learned to do as a writer of teaching books? What do I still need to work on? First grade writers also focused on spelling hard words as well as revising their work.

First Grade Word Study: This week, we are focusing on the glued sounds: ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, unk. The three letters do have individual sounds but the sounds are very closely glued together and therefore difficult to separate. We tap these sounds using three fingers to represent the three individual sounds that are glued. Our new snap words this week are: why, by, my, try, put, two, too, also, very, some, come.

First Grade Math: This week, first grade mathematicians were introduced to a large classroom number line with movable numbers. Students worked on filling in missing numbers and 'hopping' on the number line forward and back for addition and subtraction. They also worked on recognizing and naming 3D shapes. We are now in the 6th decade for days in school!

Second Step Social Emotional learning:

We are learning to read other people's body clues to understand how they might be feeling.  We are also learning about how we can help ourselves when we are struggling and help us feel more confident.
