Essential Question: How Are Materials Used for Different Purposes?
"People use a material that is right for a purpose. Sometimes more than one kind of material has the right properties for a purpose. Engineers test designs to see what material works best for a purpose."
Problem: A bridge is going to be built across a river in an area that gets a lot of rain. Design a bridge that can support 6 wooden blocks when wet.
Classroom engineers first needed to test and take notes on each bridge material that could be used-how many wooden blocks can they support while dry?
Now each materials gets tested and notes are taken about whether they absorb water or are waterproof.
Time to engineer the bridge! Student engineers used their notes about material properties to design a bridge that could support 6 wooden blocks when sprayed with 15 squirts of water and write a brief report about their design.....
and every group was successful!
"Materials can be reused in many ways. Objects can be broken apart. The pieces can be used to make new objects. Some materials can be molded into new shapes."
For this investigation, students went to 6 different stations where, working with a partner, they first had to build exactly what they saw and then reuse the materials to create something new.
