Publishing our First Stories and More

This week we worked hard as writers learning to go back and make our stories better to publish them.

These writers added whole pages:

These writers erased and rewrote whole pages.  Most of them focused on using correct lower case letters.  Others added more words or made their stories better:

We will be making our covers and sharing them with each other this week!

Library News:

We listened for keywords, spelled, and figured out all the answers to our clues to "breakout" of a locked box that had our first Global Readaloud book in it! 

We'll be doing an author study of Australian author Mem Fox over the next few weeks :)

The class did such an amazing job during our surprise Fire Drill that we stopped and had a little free time!!

Kicking off WIN time!

The whole Voyagers team got together.  We read a book about persevering.  Then we talked about how we will break up into four groups to work on our reading skills for the next several weeks.  The four teachers are Shannon Spellman, Michelle Filardi, Kate Woods, and me.  We will each lead a small group 3 times a week for about 30 minutes.

Word Study Time

During this block of time we have been practicing our lower case letters.   Handwriting sheets will now be individualized so that children are practicing letters that are hard for them.

We are now learning to do "word sorts".  We sorted picture cards by the sound of the first letter of the word.  We also matched up words and pictures.

 

 

  

 

 Mathematicians talk to one another about their math thinking.  We learn best from one another!

In Reading Workshop we are practicing building good reading habits.  

Learning to read with a partner is one of them!

 

As a class we practiced our good reading habits with this book.  We took a sneak peak and talked about our predictions before we read it.  Then we read it as a class, and then with reading our partners.  After we finish reading a book, we either reread it, talk about our favorite part or talk about what happened in the book

   

  

 

Writers can learn a lot by studying books!

We searched for and then tried to add Craft Moves to our stories.

Bold words and ellipses were the easiest to try out...

  

    

 We worked hard to add exact actions

I went to CCS for a cook out at 6 o'clock.  When I got  

there I ran to the gym and asked the gym teacher

if I could have a basketball and he said yes.....

and I made some baskets and I felt happy when I made

the baskets.  I did a dance and I almost did a handstand.

(There is the exact action on the last page-dancing and handstand!)

  

Many writers are using more than one in their stories!

We also discovered some other craft moves:

writing words to match the action ( zig zagging, going down, etc) 

repetition

rhyming

adding sound words

I went on a roller coaster

I was excited.

It was time for the roller coaster to stop.
