Growing Readers!

This week we wrapped up our science unit.
We learned first hand which beak is best to pick up food scattered among rocks.

We learned why animals, both prey and predator, use camouflage to help them survive.

Students searched for camouflaged paper moths on these trees...

then made their own to hide around the classroom.

Our Nonfiction focus in reading is going very well.
This week we learned about how nonfiction books are organized differently.

Here are examples of text features students found in our classroom library:

Children LOVE to free read from the classroom library!

YOU Skills-emojis!

In math we are practicing telling time to the hour.

Friday afternoon we met with fifth grade students from Mr. Baird's class in the library.
Each first grader chose two nonfiction books from our science unit for their fifth grade buddy to read to them.
It was a great way to end the week!

December is here!

In science this week we started off focusing on how parents take care of their offspring.

Body parts may look different from animal to animal and are used in different ways.
An animals' body parts help them to survive.

Animal teeth...

Animal feet....

And we ended the week learning about how animals move

Here are some of the great nonfiction books we have read and that are on our bookshelf.

In math we are learning to memorize our double facts AND our doubles plus or minus one facts.

During reading we are focusing on reading nonfiction.
We start by giving the whole book a sneak peek.  We make sure we study everything on every page.
We also talk about what we are learning as we read and after we read.

During YOU Skills we are learning about the "Zones of Regulation".
Ask your child about it!

Some of the other books we read this week:
