First Grade Writing Workshop
We focused on more ways to bring our stories to life. We learned to tell our stories in small steps. We also learned to bring what's inside out. This means that it is important to include what our characters think and feel when we tell our stories. First graders are also learning to use a checklist to make sure they are including important parts in their stories. First graders focused on a new writing tool... their writing partners! We worked together to touch and tell a small moment story to our partners. Our partners then asked us questions about our story. After that, we would touch and tell our story again with more details before we went off to sketch then write. This oral rehearsal of a story is an important step in our writing process.
During word study, first graders are continuing to focus on tapping out words with three sounds. They say the word, tap it out by bringing a finger down for each sound they hear, and then blend those sounds together to make the word. This tapping strategy helps us in reading and in writing. Students also began leading our ‘quick drill’ of letter names - keywords - sounds! They should be using this strategy in reading and in writing. First graders have learned how to spell the following words 'in a
snap': the, a, and, is, his, of, was, to, I.

We kicked off our Second Step Social Curriculum with this important lesson.
Reading..we have been "warming up" by practicing reading 2 pages of fluency phrases. These short phrases help train our brains to see more than one word at a time and help us get beater at reading snap words.
Older students stopped by to teach us about how to sort our waste into composting, recycling and trash.
