First Grade Updates

Word Study:Phoneme Grapheme Mapping
What on earth is that you may ask?
Cliff notes:
Phonemes are the smallest sounds that make up words.
Graphemes are the letter/letters that create those sounds.
So here is what phoneme grapheme mapping looks like in our classroom!
First we learned to put a chip in each box to represent the sounds (phonemes).  Then we learned to replace the chips with the letters (graphemes).
With digraphs, 2 letters work together to create one sound.  To graph this, two letters go in one box.  You can see this clearly with the word "shin" below.

Math
Our number system is a base ten number system.  Understanding and learning the combinations to ten is an important first grade numeracy skill.

We practiced make tens facts by playing Make Ten Go Fish!

We are also learning about number trees and fact families...

More math games!
We played Domino Top It-for this game you each pull a domino, add your dots and whoever has more keeps the dominoes.

Music Class with Mr. Topping -so fun!

Writing Workshop- our small moment stories are taking off!
Here are our big ideas:

Our Mentor texts are:

Learning to go back and add to your work is hard.  We all did it by looking for a place in our stories we could add how we were feeling.

One day we stopped to celebrate what was going well and problem solve things not going so well.

Writers love to share their writing with the class!

We are ending the week with a Friday Explore time.
A small group of children each week gets to go to the building room with Ms. Elizabeth!
