Hard working first graders!

Opinion Writing Unit

Then we chose our favorites from a collection of beach combing items and learned how to write each part of an opinion piece.

Next, they wrote opinions from these two books:

Last week we returned to writing our opinion about a favorite item from a collection.
This time it was a collection of dragons.

Classroom snapshots in the new year!

Easing back-sharing memories and celebrating the new year!

We started the new year off with a mini unit on animals in winter

Mystery Science had a couple of great explorations about animals in winter. Last week the children brought home a memory game about bears in winter.

This week they designed a cabin in Alaska that would keep visitors warm.  They shared their designs with each other.

In math we are learning about patterns in a hundreds chart.  We are learning to skip count by ten off the decade.  Counting forward is easier for children than counting backward.

We have started our next writing unit.....

Mentor texts for this unit include:

This past week we have been orally rehearsing how to state our opinions, give reasons why and end with a closing sentence. We are also learning how to agree and disagree politely.

In word study we are learning to spell and read glued/welded sounds.

Our newer snap words include:
come, some, my, try, by, very, were, here

We will be learning more about Martin Luther King Jr, celebrating our differences, equality vs equity and delving into a month long theme of kindness in February.

Stay tuned for more on these topics in the upcoming weeks.
