Busy October week!

Fire Safety at CCS!

We learned about smoke detectors, calling 911, escape plans and what fire fighters look like when they are fighting fires.  We practiced Stop, Drop and Roll and going through a smoke house.

And of course they go firefighter hats!

Thank you to our chaperones!  Our trip to Whitcomb's Land of Pumpkins was super fun!

We went through a corn maze in small groups.

Mary taught us a lot about gourds and pumpkins.

Best of all was getting our pumpkins!

That afternoon we did some pumpkin art-I will end the blog post with the beautiful finished products!

During YOU skills, students wrote about how they use their YOU skills at the patch.

Then they practiced these same skills sharing different materials at stations.

And of course they were still loving their pumpkins!

The next day we wrote about our trip.  As a class we came up with three sentences that they copied.  Kids had to write their own sentence telling about what they learned.
They were so proud of their handwriting!!  Our handwriting practice is paying off.

Readers Workshop-building our good reading habits!
When we reread a book, we notice things that we did not notice before.
Studying the pictures can help us figure out tough words.

WIN time will have a reading focus for the first rotation.
Every first grader successfully logged into Lexia Core 5 which is an online reading program tailored to each child's reading level and targets skills they need.

During Word Study, we are learning how to do sentence dictation.
I say a sentence, they repeat it and then they write it.

During Writing Workshop, every author finally read us their first published books-awesome job kids!

I'll end with their beautiful art work!
