June Arrives!

 We have been busy wrapping up units of study and enjoying time outside together as the weather as gotten nicer.  

Here are some snapshots and updates!

Writing Workshop-for the past few weeks the children have been writing books in a series.  They chose a main character and wrote different books about their character.  They made sure to write a "Book 1" and then put their books in a chronological order.  Everyone wrote a "Meet the Author" page as well.  These books are now published and will be coming home this week.  First they will record themselves reading one of their books into seesaw.

This week the my bucket was filled by the lovely notes and flowers that the children presented to me.  Thank you all so much for the kindness.  This is a very special group of kids that I feel very lucky to be teaching in such a difficult time in our world. 

And now for your biweekly updates...

We wrapped up our science unit on sound and light.  

We explored with materials that are opaque, transparent and translucent. 

We used light and color to send messages to one another.

A fun art project was making these stained glass creations.  They could make these at home as well.  We used Press and Seal and tissue paper.

We had a template under the sticky paper of a flower.

They certainly brighten up our windows!

We have kicked off new reading and writings units that complement one another.  We are reading series books and also learning to write realistic fiction series books.  These are two of my favorite units to teach in first grade.

In math we have begun a unit on geometry- basic attributes of 2D and 3 D shapes and a brief introduction to fractions.

Learning to have a growth mindset with Mo Willems:

Arbor Day was Friday.  Our K-4 classes got together outside.  The third and fourth grade classes read poems and reasons we love trees.
