Building Number Sense in First Grade
We began the week by making a prediction about how many Popsicle sticks were inside a zip-lock bag.
Then the sticks were divided up into piles for the five table groups. The students grouped their sticks into bundles of tens and leftover ones.
After looking around at the amounts each table had, we revised our predictions.
It was clear that our original predictions were not accurate!
Next, we combined all of our sticks and added them up.
We made bundles of hundreds, tens and ones-expanded notation.
The next day, children got to work on a packet where they had to combine 2 digit numbers.
After working for about 15 minutes we came together to learn a new way to share our learning.
Two mathematicians tried it out while we watched
Then off they went to work to "read" each others' math papers.
We then came together to summarize how to add 2 digit numbers
This is the precursor and foundation for the algorithm they will eventually learn.
These strategies build number sense and mental computation skills.
The next day children practiced building and then adding 2 two-digit numbers.
We ended the week recording our work on a game sheet.
This strategy of adding tens, then ones, the putting them together works with larger numbers as well...
Our math work inspired some students to count some different materials on our math shelf!
