We started the week off meeting with our Buddy Classroom-Mrs. Poirer's Fourth Grade. We are rotating through three different stations. In my room, after reading no two alike we are making beautiful snowflake mobiles. The group in Mrs. Poirer's room is making wool bracelets. The group with Mrs. Batty are playing games together.
We started a new reading unit and have made new reading classes.
If your child was with Mrs. Murray, they are now back with me, A new small group will work with Mrs. Murray. Being able to break up into smaller classes for reading and math has been very beneficial. We meet every week to plan our instruction.
We are now learning about Fairy Tales!
The focus this past week and next is on the elements of fairy tales. First I read a classic to the class and we filled out this chart together.
The next day I read a classic and they filled out the chart with their reading partner.
Now, I read a classic to kick off reading,
Then they choose a fairy tale to read with their partner.
Together they read and fill out the elements chart.
Earth Materials....how can rocks be sorted by size? How do rocks get weathered?
Is there an earth material smaller than sand?
After examining particles of sand, we poured water into our vials of sand, shook them, and let them sit overnight.
Here is what we found out-silt is smaller than sand!
Later in the week we learned that clay is even smaller than silt. We ended the week learning about weathering, erosion and how land forms are made.
Learning about Empathy with our Second Step work:
Using an open number line in math to add double digit numbers. This is building solid number sense. Before learning the traditional algorithm of "carry over" children need to have a solid understanding of place value.

We filled our Penny Jar again!
We had a whole school penny celebration. Children could choose to go to the MPR for a dance party, the library for board games or stay in our room for a quiet free choice.
