First Grade Writer's Workshop: First graders are continuing to work hard in their nonfiction writing! This week, we began to focus on longer text. We used Anne Schreiber’s book Sharks! to engage in an inquiry session to answer the question: What did Anne do that we could try as we start writing teaching chapter books? We discovered the table of contents! We also learned that writers plan their chapter books by telling information across, and down, their fingers and that writers help readers picture the fact (the detail) and understand why it matters. One way writers do this is by using comparisons.
First Grade Word Study: We continue to work with the three sound glued sounds ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk & unk as well as the snap words why, by, my, try, put, two, too, very, also, some, come. This week, we worked to spell words with our glued sounds and suffix -s.
Second Grade Writing: We kicked off the new year setting goals and making our books look more like the published books we read.
