First days in first grade!

We have been very busy in first grade!

One of the first activities we do to start off the year is to work on self portraits.

We teach social emotional learning though a program called Second Step.  It has engaging photos, videos, songs and games.  Our first unit is focused on the skills we need for learning.
We are learning how to be whole body listeners.

We welcomed a monarch caterpillar into our classroom and are learning about the life cycle.  The chrysalis is changing from bright green to black.  A butterfly should emerge very soon!

During math we use a large variety of manipulatives.  First they had a chance to free explore with some.

We use popsicle sticks to learn about tally marks.

We use ten frames to practice counting and writing numerals.

We use number racks to find multiple ways to make numbers.

Make 10 facts are very important

So are ten and some more..teen numbers.

And reading fun math themed books is a favorite!

During reading we are learning how to become avid readers through a nursery rhyme unit.

We are all special!

We are all important!

Play is important!  Once a week we have explore time in the classroom.

And of course there is the awesome CCS playground!

Here are some of the others books we have read as a class this year:
