Math Updates:
We use many different games to strengthen our numeracy skills.
Last week we learned how to play Make the Sum.
Partners choose a target number between 6-10. We all chose 10.
Then they take turns flipping cards and take cards from the pile that add to 10.
Not all games are partner games.
For Spin & Add and Spin & Subtract, they each had their own spinner to generate subtraction and addition facts. This game enforces locking in a number and then counting on or back as well as writing addition and subtraction facts in the vertical, we call stacked, format.
You saw on the unit 2 test that came home that we are working with fact families. We are using our October calendar markers to practice this skill as well as telling a number story to go with the picture.
We will be learning more about doubles and doubles plus or minus one facts.
If you know 5 + 5 =10, then you know the sum of 6 + 5 is one more than that.
Literacy at a glance!
This week we will begin to roll out literacy stations during reading workshop. Each day, children will move through a series of 3 activities. Each day they will have a different series of activities. These include: handwriting practice, snap word practice, spelling practice, listening to a book on tape & responding, Lexia Core 5 and EPIC! As they grow more independent with the rotations and routines I will begin to pull small groups to work with on reading.
During writing we have been studying our mentor texts to learn how to make our books come to life like the books we read.
Then we try to add them to the books we are writing
We use this poster when doing sentence dictation and will use it when we publish a chosen book or two from our writing unit.
