This past week we assigned the children two different seesaw activities. While practicing math skills, they learned how to write using a touchpad, take photos, resize/reposition the photos and use a microphone to record themselves. They did great!
Comparing quantities has gone very well!
We practice building and representing our teen numbers as ten and some more facts. We call the vertical addition algorithm the "stacked method". We will not teach them to add your ones and carry over into your tens when we do get into double digit addition-that is short cut introduced in later grades. We do teach the importance of lining up your numbers correctly while writing stacked equations.
Additionally we have been using quilts to explore patterns and skip counting by 5.
Our word study work has been centered on learning the doubling rule:
We have been learning about having a growth mindset.
When learning something new we need to remember that we may fail at first. We may need extra time or help. That's ok! It just means we cannot do it yet!

In science we learned about sound this past week.
The key concept is that sound is caused by vibrations.
We made decorations for our Food Shelf basket.
Last week we had a fun school wide fall festival. We enjoyed a jazz band and concert choir performance followed by Zumba dancing with fifth and sixth graders.
