This week the children worked in the garden with Deirdre.
Deirdre and Abby sorted, counted and weighed the harvest. Here are the totals:
Squash: 11, weighing 72 pounds.
Carrots: 149 weighing 32 pounds, and broken down by color:
Yellow: 56 weighing 16.5 lbs
Orange: 50 weighing 10 lbs
Red: 19 weighing 1.5 lbs
Purple: 24 weighing 4 lbs
The next day we taste tested the four different carrots-they were yummy!
In math we have been learning about number trees/fact families. Each child made a flip card for a fact family, listed the related facts and a story problem that matches one of the equations.
They read their story problems to another mathematician, who had to circle the equation that correctly matched and solved the story.
During You Skills we studied more pictures and brainstormed who was being an ally, upstander, and active listener in them. Then each child wrote about one way they have been an ally at school.
As part of our daily reading, children now have trick word cards in their binders that they need to practice reading. The listen to each other read them at the start of reading each day.
Our Core Science Idea this week was.....
What kinds of sounds are easy to identify?
First we used a "drop box". Partners had the same exact items. One partner would drop an item in the box. The other had to try to guess what it was just by the sound it made when hitting the table.
Next we experimented with tuning forks. Even though we could not see it vibrating, we could feel it.
We used the vibrating tuning fork to make a ping pong ball bounce by gently touching the fork to the ping pong ball. It was really cool!

After a scientists meeting, they wrote in their journals. We found that loud sounds and sounds we have heard many times before (ones we are familiar with) were the easiest to identify.
