This week we began a new science unit on sound. We kicked off with this anchor chart where I recorded what they think science is and what a scientist does.
Next, I read them a book and we talked about key ideas that we could add to our list.
Then we were ready!
The question we set out to answer is "What causes sound?"
We experimented with cups, rubber bands and Popsicle sticks.
We stopped every now and then to share our discoveries-scientist always share ideas. We found out that to make the rubber band make a sound, we needed to pluck it. The plucking made it vibrate. When we stopped the vibration, the sound stopped. If we put the stick in the cup and plucked the rubber band, it made the stick jump!
Next we experimented with a "table fiddle". Can you see the string vibrating in these pictures?
Time for some research. Every student has a copy of this book to reference. We read one section together. We also learned how to use the glossary.
The next day, each child made his/her own "whiteboard fiddle". We made different sounds by plucking different sections of the rubber band.
Science challenge: can you make the paperclip move without touching it?

Now it was time to write. Scientists record their ideas in a science notebook.
We have a list of key ideas and vocabulary words for the children to reference in the classroom.
