Snow Day Post

On Monday the first and second graders got together to share their published nonfiction writing pieces.  They shared things they learned from each other's books on Seesaw.

First Grade Word Study & Writer's Workshop: This week, first graders worked on closed syllables. A closed syllable has one vowel, closed in by a consonant, and the vowel sound is short. We began adding suffix -s to closed syllable words. During our writing time, we are working on core idea: Writers use all they know to write well. We will be doing a two week refresher on narrative and information writing by reminding ourselves what makes each kind of writing special. We are also focusing on letter formation, capitals, letter formation, spacing, and writing in complete sentences. As partners, students had fun taking one topic and generating an introduction for a teaching book and the beginning of a narrative. It's amazing how a topic, such as pools, sounds so different depending on the type of writing you are doing!

Second Grade Word Study & Writer's Workshop: Second Graders used the rest of the week to practice spelling skills and had their unit test on Thursday.  Our next unit will focus on er, ir, and ur.  The unit will last 2 weeks.  These are tricky because they all make the same sound,  Our new snap words are: picture, learn, earth, father, brother and mother.

Our next unit will be opinion writing.

CCS K-4 graders participated in World Read Aloud Day.  

My group and I had a great time together!

During Reading we continue to focus on how to read nonfiction texts.  We are practicing putting our learning into our own words.  We close the book and then state back or write the facts we learned. We are also focusing on how new learning can spur new questions.

Wow!  We earned a lot of pennies in January!  

We ended the day Thursday with a surprise free choice in the classroom!
