March Fun


First graders are learning that opinion writers try to persuade their readers. We are working to compose pieces with clearly stated opinions and reasons but also work with catchy introductions and conclusions. Watch out… they are getting really good at it! They even convinced me to take them outside one day! In word study, first graders are working with the suffixes -s, -ing, & -ed. They have learned that -ed makes three sounds: /id/ /d/ /t/.

Second graders are also hard at work on an opinion writing unit.  We used planners to write about our favorite season.




  



Next, they chose their own topics with the help of these posters


Now we are going to begin writing letters to someone else sharing our opinions about a character in a book.

Our word study focus has been on the patterns that create the long a sound:


In math first graders have been working with fact families and solving penguin problem stories involving joining and separating.
